Thai Buddhist Chetawan Temple
Located just a 5-minute drive from the Hotel, this famous Thai Buddhist temple complex is one of PJ’s most prominent landmarks. Completed in 1962, the stunning Wat Chetawan is
heavily gilded in gold leaves and decorative multi-colored glass tiles, and crowned with a multi-tiered roof trimmed with chor fah (gable apex). Surrounded by lush, leafy grounds, Wat Chetawan Temple, located just 5 minutes’ drive from the hotel, remains a central community convergence point for droves of PJ folks and Buddhist devotees in the Klang Valley.
Petaling Jaya Museum
Easily accessible via the LRT Asia Jaya station, the Petaling Jaya Museum is just 1-stop away to LRT Taman Jaya station. Set amidst the green surroundings of the Taman Jaya Park, the museum was formerly an environment education center. The three galleries onsite highlight the history of Petaling Jaya, from its humble beginnings as a township to it being granted city status in 2006. Visitors can also view a 3D model of the city, multimedia presentations and archived photographs among other items.
Thean Hou Temple
Located in Seputeh, this ornate temple is about 8.2km away (approximately 10 minutes’ drive) from Sheraton Petaling Jaya Hotel via the Federal Highway. Opened in September 1989, Thean Hou Temple was built by the Hainanese community as a tribute to the Goddess of Thean Hou. Beautifully decorated by dragon-entwined columns and stately structures bearing traditional Chinese architectural style and roofs with sweeping curvatures, Thean Hou Temple is a key venue for Chinese cultural and religious activities. Besides the marriage registration office, there are souvenir shops, a food court and a multi-purpose banquet hall.
Istana Negara (National Palace) is the official residence of Malaysia’s head of state, the Yang DiPertuan Agong. The original Istana Negara − built in 1928 – was formerly the residence of a Chinese millionaire and is now a museum housing royal regalia and artefacts. Opened in 2011, the new Istana Negara occupies 97.65 hectares complex with three main sections comprising the formal, royal and administrative components. It takes approximately 15 minutes via the Kerinchi Link or Federal Highway to reach Istana Negara from the Hotel.
Bukit Gasing Forest Park
Once a rubber estate, this stretch of green belt dividing PJ from the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur is now a lush haven of secondary forest. Designated as a forest reserve,
Bukit Gasing Forest Park is a popular recreational spot for PJ residents to relax and work out as several hiking trails are found within the park, to suit different energy and fitness levels. To access the forest park, drive 9 minutes via Jalan Gasing from the Hotel.
Taman Jaya Park
As the first recreational lake gardens in PJ, Taman Jaya Park has always been a popular spot for jogging, exercising and other recreational pursuits. Verdant greenery surrounds a sizeable scenic lake where communal aerobics sessions and public activities are held regularly. Easily accessible via the LRT Asia Jaya station, it is just 1-stop away to LRT Taman Jaya station.
Kuala Lumpur Bird Park
Home to more than 3,000 birds and about 200 species of local and foreign birds, this park allows most of the birds inside to fly freely within the aviary. The sprawling terrain which mimics the birds’ natural habitat enable them to breed naturally. There is also a Hornbill Park onsite in addition to smaller caged aviaries. The KL Bird Park is located in the serene and scenic Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens, 29 minutes (11 km) away from the Hotel via taxi/car.
Designed to provide a green touch to the Petronas Twin Towers surroundings, the park includes the man-made Lake Symphony which has water fountain shows at noon and in the evenings. Over 1,900 indigenous trees are found here in addition to cascading waterfalls and reflecting pools. A jogging track encircles the park apart from a children’s playground, sheltered resting spots, patterned footpaths, and a public kids’ paddling pool. Located in the heart of the capital city, it is 9.7km (approximately 23 minutes’ drive) via the Federal Highway from Sheraton Petaling Jaya Hotel.
